One of the last three primeval forests in Europe, Biogradska Gora protects an ancient ecosystem unchanged for millennia.
Biogradska Gora National Park is a living testament to Europe's ancient past. Established in 1878, it is one of the oldest protected areas in the world, and its centerpiece — a 1,600-hectare virgin forest — is one of the last three remaining primeval forests on the European continent.
The forest is home to trees over 500 years old, with some specimens reaching 45 meters in height. Walking through the ancient beech, maple, and elm trees feels like stepping back in time thousands of years. The biodiversity here is extraordinary, with over 2,000 plant species catalogued.
Biogradsko Lake, nestled at 1,094 meters above sea level, is the jewel of the park. This glacial lake, surrounded by untouched forest, reflects the peaks of the Bjelasica mountain range and offers a tranquility that is increasingly rare in modern Europe.
